What happened?

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has posted an updated 2026–27 MBBS approved-intake matrix excluding Institutions of National Importance (INIs). Its covering letter and MARB public notice are dated 21 September 2026; NMC listed the PDF on 22 September 2026. The attached matrix is stated to be current as on 18 September 2026. Compared with the preceding matrix as on 1 September, the approved national total rises from 140,214 to 140,664 MBBS seats—a net addition of 450.

Reading the totals: Government capacity increases by 150, private capacity by 300; these sum to the national change of 450. The listed college count rises by three (government 445 → 447; private 391 → 392). These are differences between two NMC regulatory matrices, not the number of open counselling vacancies or an allotment promise. The new matrix separately notes 3,850 MBBS seats across 41 newly established colleges in its 2026–27 total; that figure is not the change since 1 September.

Reconciliation: Maharashtra +150 and six entries at +50 each equal the 450-seat national increase. Within Maharashtra, the NMC state row changes from 87 to 89 colleges; Uttarakhand changes from 9 to 10. The state comparison does not allocate these seats among MCC AIQ, state, institutional, management, NRI or other counselling quotas; those splits must come from the respective counselling authorities.

Who is affected—and what to do

  1. MBBS applicants: Review the new NMC college-wise matrix and watch the relevant MCC/state authority for an updated counselling seat matrix or choice list. Only add or reorder a college when it is actually offered to your eligible quota/category on the official portal, and follow that authority’s live choice deadlines.

  2. Applicants outside a state: An NMC-approved seat is not automatically a 15% All India Quota seat. Verify the MCC AIQ matrix and college/quota eligibility separately; private/deemed/state/institutional arrangements differ.

  3. BDS applicants: This publication is an MBBS regulatory matrix, not a BDS seat-matrix revision.

Important limitation: NMC says the matrix may be revised following appeal or other competent-authority decisions; central and state counselling committees are to use the applicable updated approvals and must not admit beyond approved intake. The PDF’s state list contains both “Chattisgarh” and “Chhattisgarh” entries; the seven changes above are based on like-for-like entries and published grand totals. Check individual college rows and the final counselling matrix before making a college-specific claim.
