🌍 Important NRI Quota Update: MCC has clarified the eligibility requirements for candidates seeking admission under the NRI quota during NEET UG Counselling 2026.

Candidates relying on an NRI relative or sponsor must provide valid proof of relationship, legal guardianship and financial sponsorship.
The Medical Counselling Committee has listed the official Public Notice for Eligibility of NRI Candidature for Academic Year 2026–27 on its UG Current Events page.
The notice applies to candidates who:
- Are NRI or OCI candidates
- Want to participate under the NRI quota
- Registered with NTA as Indian but may later seek conversion to NRI candidature
- Are being sponsored by an eligible NRI parent, relative or legal guardian
Who Can Be Considered for NRI Quota?
According to the MCC notice, the following routes may be considered, subject to complete documentary proof.
NRI Parent
A candidate may be eligible when:
- The mother is an NRI and ordinarily resides abroad, or
- The father is an NRI and ordinarily resides abroad
First-Degree NRI Relation
The notice also recognises applicable first-degree relationships, including:
- Real brother
- Real sister
Nearest NRI Blood Relative
Where the candidate is treated as a ward, the eligible nearest blood relatives may include:
- Real brother or sister of the father
- Real brother or sister of the mother
- Paternal grandfather or grandmother
- Maternal grandfather or grandmother
- First-degree paternal or maternal cousins
⚠️ Relationship alone is not sufficient. The NRI relative must ordinarily reside abroad and must satisfy the legal-guardian and sponsorship conditions.
Legal Guardianship Requirement
For candidates relying on an NRI relative as a sponsor or guardian, MCC has stated that documentary evidence may be sought to establish that the sponsor is the candidate’s bona fide legal guardian.
The evidence must support guardianship according to the applicable provisions of the Guardians and Wards Act, 1890.
The candidate may be required to produce:
- Evidence that the sponsor has looked after the candidate as guardian
- Legal documents supporting guardianship
- An affidavit confirming the guardianship facts
- Proof that the sponsor ordinarily resides abroad
- Documentary proof of the blood relationship
Financial Sponsorship Requirement
The MCC Information Bulletin also refers to a notarised affidavit from the legal guardian confirming that the sponsor will bear:
- The full tuition fee
- Other course-related charges
- Living expenses during the study period
The sponsorship claim should be supported by valid financial evidence, including the applicable NRE bank-account documents.
Documents Candidates Should Keep Ready
Candidates intending to claim NRI quota should prepare clear and valid documents, as applicable:
- NEET UG 2026 admit card
- NEET UG 2026 scorecard
- Candidate passport, where applicable
- NRI sponsor’s valid passport
- Visa, residence permit or work permit of the sponsor
- OCI or PIO card, where applicable
- NRI certificate issued by the competent Indian Embassy or Consulate, where required
- Relationship certificate or officially verified family tree
- Birth certificates or other records proving the blood relationship
- Legal guardianship documents
- Notarised affidavit from the sponsor
- Sponsorship undertaking for the entire course fee and living expenses
- NRE bank-account evidence
- Other documents prescribed in the MCC Information Bulletin or a later conversion notice
🚨 Incomplete, inconsistent or unsupported NRI claims may lead to rejection of NRI candidature or cancellation during document verification.
Important Conversion Clarification
MCC has not yet published a separate 2026 nationality-conversion submission window on the active candidate board.
The existing public notice explains who may be eligible, but it does not announce:
- A conversion-email window
- A final submission deadline
- A candidate portal for conversion
- A 2026 list of converted candidates
Candidates should not submit documents to an old email address or follow a previous-year conversion timetable unless MCC officially republishes it for 2026.
What Students Should Do Now
- Read the official NRI eligibility notice.
- Confirm whether the sponsor falls within an accepted relationship.
- Prepare official relationship and family-tree documents.
- Confirm that the sponsor ordinarily resides abroad.
- Arrange legal-guardianship evidence where applicable.
- Prepare the notarised sponsorship affidavit.
- Keep passport, visa, NRI certificate and financial documents ready.
- Monitor MCC for the separate NRI conversion notice or candidate-portal instructions.
- Do not rely only on a simple sponsorship letter.
- Upload and produce only genuine, verifiable documents.
Important Warning
An NRI sponsor does not automatically make a candidate eligible for an NRI quota seat.
Eligibility will depend on:
- The relationship with the sponsor
- NRI status and overseas residence
- Legal guardianship evidence
- Affidavits and sponsorship undertaking
- MCC document scrutiny
- College-level original-document verification
- Seat availability and counselling merit
