India PG Seats May Expand Further

Government data reportedly shows 86,360 PG medical seats and reiterates plans for 5,000 more by 2028–29; no blanket Diploma-to-DNB conversion is reportedly planned.

⚠️ Verification Pending: New reports citing Government information in Parliament indicate updated PG medical seat totals and a clarification on Diploma-to-DNB conversion. The exact primary Parliamentary document is still being verified.

What Is Being Reported?

India is reported to currently have 86,360 postgraduate medical seats.

The Government has also reiterated its approved plan to create 5,000 additional PG medical seats by 2028–29 under Phase III of the medical education expansion programme.

Does This Add 5,000 Seats to NEET PG 2026 Counselling?

🚨 No.

The 5,000-seat figure is a multi-year expansion target.

Candidates should consider a seat available only when it is:

  • Approved by NMC/NBEMS
  • Assigned to a recognised institution/course
  • Included in the official MCC or State counselling seat matrix

Diploma to DNB Clarification

Media reports citing the Government also state that there is currently no proposal to convert all postgraduate Diploma seats into DNB degree seats.

This is relevant for candidates comparing:

  • MD/MS
  • PG Diploma
  • Post-MBBS DNB
  • NBEMS Diploma pathways

Candidate Advice

  1. Do not assume the national expansion target is part of the current counselling matrix.
  2. Check the final institution-wise seat matrix.
  3. Verify new or increased PG seats individually.
  4. Check NMC/NBEMS recognition before choice locking.
  5. Follow MCC and State counselling matrices as the final source for available seats.
